all things expire

all things expire is a project that explores the relativity of permanence and the art of decaying.

the project consists of a series of seven tattooed objects, including fruits, leaves, and bread, each of which is preserved in a glass jar and left to decay on its own. the ink is injected into the objects in seven unique freehand mandala tattoo patterns, subsequently leaving an open wound on the surface.

_

the ideology that tattoos last forever is still flawed – it depends on the ink bearer, and none of us lives forever. like the rotten fruit, the broken leaves, and the moldy bread, human bodies and human skin decay by day too. there are extreme cases where, for scientific purposes, researchers and archivists have to preserve dead body parts that contain tattoo pigments using classic preservation techniques. without preservatives, human skin will too perish as a part of the biodegrading process, with which the “permanent” tattoos are taken away by nature as well.

_

the perception of time differs among observers, and permanence is always relative.
